SOCIOLOGY OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract

Abstract. The article presents the results of the survey aimed at the identification of human values of students at two time points – 2005 and 2015. In both studies, the values of the students were identified by a reflective method, in which the respondents themselves called their values, clarified their personal sense, and then estimated them quantitatively (by 100 points). We assessed the personal significance of each of value and satisfaction with the state of the respective sphere in their lives. The objective of this study was to carry out two mutually supplementary tasks: (a) to identify the content of personal values and their quantitative assessments, changes for the 10Nyear interval, and (b) to draw attention to the methodological problems, concerning the close relationship between the meaningful results and methodological techniques. The authors point to the prevalence in the value structure of both student groups of the values of private life and the weak expression of humanities and social values, such as patriotism, freedom and democracy, environmental concerns and nature protection.

ACADEMIC WRITING

59-67 617
Abstract

Abstract. Social and political changes bring the interest to academic writing into life, however, educational realia specify the content of academic writing that is relevant for Russia. Teaching predominantly non-academic students could be distinguished as the first factor that determines specific content in native tradition. The second factor deals with the structuring of the educational process: teaching academic writing is a two-staged process abroad while in Russia we miss one of the stages (generally the initial one). Practical teaching experience enables to single out an additional factor, i.e. a leading approach to teaching academic writing. In case with the genre-based approach, a number of genres of academic texts are on the focus. If one tends to a process-oriented writing, then some rhetorical elements could be included into the content. In the article the author specifies and systematizes both genres and rhetorical elements relevant for Russian educational needs. They overlap if we pay attention to sociocultural peculiarities of the genres and their rhetorical structure in English. Introduction of the sociocultural aspect reflects the needs of person oriented approach as it motivates students to academic writing learning.

Abstract

Abstract. The article raises the problem of the quality of academic writing in scholarly texts. For the purpose of defining the role and significance given to the academic writing aspect in scholarly texts, the author analyses a number of official reports on recently defended theses written by formally appointed reviewers. The article reveals that the reviewers’ comments on the quality of academic writing are of random character, and they mainly deal with stylistic issues. They are given little weight (if any) in the general assessment matrix. The reason for the situation could be the absence of universally accepted standards of academic writing. The Russian academic discourse needs profound research of its linguistic foundations, so that conventions of Russian academic writing could be developed. It will ultimately improve the quality of academic writing.

Abstract

Abstract. The model of e-learning environment built on the basis of cyclic principles, consistency and innovation is being discussed. Its main components are the leadership, normative framework, educational, informational, technological, and physical space components. Each component in itself comprises a complex subsystem with a specific content, participants, objectives, and actions. Non-directional nature of the sequence diagram that represents the model reflects the possibility of formation of e-learning at university in any workflow. The presented e-learning environment model is universal. On the one hand, it gives the opportunity to create an educational institution e-learning environment for hybrid, distant or mobile types of e-learning. On the other hand, the model meets the needs of any educational institution and can be viewed upon as a basis for the implementation strategy of e-learning technologies.

INTERNATIONALIZATION OF EDUCATION

Abstract

Abstract. The objective of the study was to identify the groups of higher education institutions having similar indicators of international educational activities, and analyze their characteristics. In the framework of the research the statistical data on indicators of international educational activities of Russian universities and branches were collected, processed and systematized. The cluster analysis of 362 universities and 28 branches was conducted on the basis of indicators that evaluate the state of their international educational activity: the number of foreign undergraduate, graduate and mobile students and the number of double-degree international programs.

The cluster analysis has identified five groups of higher education institutions with similar characteristics: «outsiders», «recruiters of international students», «diversificators», «strategists» and «national leaders». The study confirmed the absence of a direct relationship between university’s activity is in realizing international educational activities and the income that it receives from this practice. The revenues of universities from one cluster may be incommensurable. This is due to the difference in the tuition fees and the receipt of income from the provision of additional educational services to foreign students.

The resulting classification of higher education institutions can be considered in the development of targeted governmental actions that support higher education institutions in their efforts to increase the competitiveness in the international education market. It may also be of interest to Russian university managers as it provides an overview of the main directions of development and the results of international educational activities of the competing universities.

Abstract

Abstract. At Karaganda State Technical University at the expense of the National Fund of the Republic of Kazakhstan there has been developed and introduced a new subject-oriented master’s degree educational program «Robotics. Control systems». The program has been developed on the basis of practices of the leading world universities. In its implementation participate the wellNknown technical universities of Russia – the members of the international educational Internet Synergy project. The lecturers conduct the lessons both in the status of the invited professors for teaching separate sections of the program courses and also are engaged in teaching full courses in the network form within a term.

Within the program implementation there have been used technologies of project training. Its distinctive feature is orientation to solving specific objectives, to developing and upgrading the enterprises, as well as availability of the tripartite contract between a higher education institution, an undergraduate and an enterprise with possibilities of the graduate employment. The program solves three problems: the implementation of projects that are needed for upgrading production; training of specialists who do not need an adaptation period at enterprise; the guaranteed employment of master’s degree program graduates.

Thereby training of engineering personnel within the subjectNoriented master’s degree program in line with the Bologna Process is provided.
